American Hikers Thank Senators

Two American hikers who had been held in an Iranian prison for more than two years visited with The Foreign Relations Committee and other senators who had pressed for their freedom on Capitol Hill October 12.

Joshua Fattal, Shane Bauer and their families met with Sen. Al Franken (D, Minn) and others to personally thank them for their work in getting them released from the Iranian prison. “These families were remarkable throughout this whole thing,” Franken said during a meeting at Sen. Bob Casey’s (D, PA) office. “They stuck together. They brought an incredible amount of intelligence and creativity. They had to exercise a lot of strength at times.”

Fattal said he heard about Casey’s visiting his home to reassure his mother and his reaching out to foreign embassies to raise their case throughout the world community.  He, Bauer and  Bauer’s fiance Sarah Shourd were hiking near the Iraq-Iran border when they were arrested by Iranian soldiers an
d accused of being spies.  Shourd was released after only 14 months, but Fattal and Bauer were both held for over two years, being released on bail on September 21.
